Stunnel (Secure Tunnel) is an external program not associated in any way with NoteSmith. It converts typical, plain text emails into those acceptable to Secure Socket Layer (SSL) email servers such as Gmail. Stunnel will run on XP, Vista, and Windows7/8/10, both 32 and 64 bit. When NoteSmith generates an email, Stunnel can encrypt it into a format acceptable to Gmail, which then sends it.

If you have problems using Stunnel, go to Stunnel.org or try your favorite search engine. Neither Stunnel nor Gmail is supported by NoteSmith technicians. The file appears on the NoteSmith installation media strictly as a courtesy.

To install Stunnel, follow these directions:

1. Double click the installer file.
2. Read the License Agreement and accept.
3. At Installation Options, uncheck Certificate Tools and uncheck Terminal Version. You should leave Start Menu Shortcut checked and Desktop Shortcut checked.
4. Click Install, which will create a Stunnel folder in either your C:\Program Files folder or the C:\Program Files (x86) folder, depending on your version of Windows.

To run Stunnel the first time:

1. Go to Start, All Programs, Stunnel, and choose Edit Stunnel.conf, which is the configuration file. Notepad will open with the file visible.
2. Be sure a semi-colon (;) is in front of every line that has text on it except for the items in the next step below. Be careful and thorough.
3. Backspace over the semi-colon (;) in this Gmail section only so it looks exactly like this:

[gmail-smtp]
client = yes
accept = 127.0.0.1:25
connect = smtp.gmail.com:465

4. Choose File, Save and then File, Exit.
5. Drag the Desktop icon with the left mouse button and be careful not to let go. Drag it over to the Windows Start button so the Start menu opens, hold it over All Programs so that menu opens, then hold it over the Startup folder so it opens. Now let go. Be sure the icon appears in this Startup folder menu choice, otherwise, find it and try again.
6. Reboot your computer. Stunnel will start automatically and appear in the System Tray at the bottom of the screen. You can Exit it from there any day if you do not plan to use it or restart it from Start, All Programs, Stunnel.

Note: Other than Edit Stunnel.conf, the other menu items under Start, All Programs, Stunnel work under XP only.

To send email from NoteSmith through Gmail:

1. Make sure Stunnel is running.
2. Start NoteSmith and go to File, Company Configuration, Email.
3. Enter 127.0.0.1 as the Mail Server and 25 as the Port.
4. Enter your Gmail user name (usually your email address without @gmail.com), password, and full email address. Save and Exit.
5. Send a test email from the Tools menu.
